A student from Handsworth is being profiled as part of Millennium Point’s 10th birthday celebrations, having started her career at Thinktank as a work experience placement student and progressing to become a permanent member of the museum team.

Sumpa Paul is being profiled after she joined the Science and Heritage Career Ladder, a scheme that offers paid traineeships to young people and, following a successful placement, was offered a permanent position at the museum.

The student, who studies at the University of Coventry, is also helping to promote the ‘My BIG day out at Millennium Point’ competition which is asking members of the public to submit photographs and other content from their most memorable day at the venue for the chance to win prizes.

Sumpa said:
“My BIG day at Millennium Point was when I found out I was going to New York to learn about the Science Career Ladder scheme at the New York Hall of Science. Whilst I was there, I was able to learn about the different stages of their scheme and develop my skills as a junior enabler.

“Following the trip, Thinktank adopted a similar training method that has helped us to provide the very best interaction for our visitors. The entire experience was fantastic and I loved being a part of it.”

Karen Steed, acting chief executive of Millennium Point, said:
“The Science Career Ladder is a great scheme that offers young people the chance to gain valuable work experience at Thinktank. We have strong links with the New York Hall of Science who have been running a similar scheme since 1986, and we have worked with them to develop a strong programme that offers our participants a key insight into working life with the possibility of career progression.

“Millennium Point has always offered visitors, students and staff a wide and varied range of opportunities and I’m really excited to hear about everyone’s special days connected to the building leading up to our birthday celebrations in September.”

Submit photographs, text and audio to Millennium Point for the chance to win some great prizes, including family tickets to Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum. For more information, visit www.millenniumpoint.org.uk/mybigdayout.
