This week sees Soweto Kinch celebrates his musical freedom with the launch of his much-anticipated ‘The War in A Rack’ EP in Birmingham and London.
The War in A Rack features six tracks by national and international artists and signifies a completely different approach to reaching musical audiences. This is simultaneously the launch of Soweto Kinch Productions as an independent recording and production company.
In December 2006 Soweto started blogging about the difficulties of getting his music filed under the correct category in major music retailers. Since then the landscape of music distribution has changed and the reach of independent artists has been revolutionised. Established high street retailers such as Virgin Megastores, Tower Records and Fopp have all but vanished and record labels such as EMI and Universal have drastically downsized.
The Launch Events will be taking place at Hockley Bar, Birmingham on 26 November, and Rich Mix, London on 29 November.
This is the first time since A Life in The Day of B19, and the frustrated release of Basement Fables pt, that Soweto Kinch has presented new work. Therefore the EP celebrates his emergence as an independent artist, making the break from his record label and the industry’s fascination with categorising creativity.
As an award winning alto-saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch is one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians in both the British jazz and hip hop scenes. He has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2007 he won his second MOBO Award for the Best Jazz Act, fending off stiff competition from the likes of Wynton Marsalis.
