The Hundred
Faces of Phoenix
MISSION:
Setting British history in the inaugural season of The Hundred in 2021, Abtaha Maqsood become the first British Muslim female to play in a hijab. With the aim of championing and inspiring female cricket players, we produced a mural of Abtaha in a key Asian community school.
Approach:
Taking over a permanent site on the playground wall at Marlborough Primary School in Small Heath, the 8ft x 20m hand-painted mural was designed by local female artist, Lucy Danielle Illustration, and portrayed Abtaha against the Birmingham Phoenix branded background. Inspiring the next generation of female cricketers, students from the school’s academy were invited to meet Abtaha, test out their cricket skills and come home with a Birmingham Phoenix goodie bag. The permanent artwork will remain to be seen daily by over 600 students helping to ingrain a legacy above and beyond The Hundred tournament.
HIGHLIGHTS:
This activity resulted in over 35 pieces of press coverage across key national and regional media, including BBC News, ITV Central and Birmingham World, as well as engaging parents, teachers and children from the local community who were at the school on the day of the launch.
